Norfolk Tavern

The Norfolk Tavern was situated on Middlegate
Street, on the corner with Row 77. This pub was present by 1819 as
The Old Fountain. It became The Norfolk Tavern in 1830 when it was taken
over by S&P of Norwich. |

It was known as The Middlegate
Distillery from 1903 when it was run by a Mr Allen. The Allen family ran it
from 1903 to 1950. As happens a lot in Yarmouth pubs are known by a
different name to what they actually call themselves. Apparently the name
was not officially changed until 1985. However I have known the pub for 60
years and it is has always been known as Allens. Dad used to drink there
because in the '60's it was one of only two pubs in Yarmouth that sold Real
Ale. The other being the Crystal. Just reopened after a refurb. |
