Dagenham, Essex
Dagenham was an Essex village until the early 1920s when
building of the Becontree Housing Estate, consisting of 27,000 council
homes, was started. The building of the estate and of Fords car assembly
plant, which employed over 24,000, transformed Dagenham into a
working-class, industrial suburb of London.
As the area was built up in the 1920s and 1930s few
new pubs were built and those that were were large and impersonal and not to
the taste of the new residents who mainly came from the East End of London.
In some cases an existing pub was redeveloped or rebuilt, sometimes in a
slightly different location. The lack of pubs lead to the growth of a lot of
social and working men's clubs which pubs sometimes find it difficult to
compete with.
Most of the information below comes from a book Dagenham Pubs Past and
Present, written by Tony Clifford a former librarian for Barking and
Dagenham and published in 1996. Tony has obtained information from a wide
